Foundation What We Do
|
HistoryThe Dwight D. Howard Foundation Inc. was established in 2004 by Dwight Howard, II and his parents Dwight, Sr., and Sheryl to empower young people to reach their highest potential by initiating and supporting community-based programs that promote the education and to strengthen family relationships of all of America’s children. Dwight has been reaching out to kids ever since he was a kid himself and continued to do so all through elementary, junior and high school. From these efforts evolved fundraising events such as the Howard and Howard Basketball Camp and the Dwight Howard Prayer Breakfast. Dwight and his parents started the Foundation based on the belief that we all have the responsibility to help young people achieve their dreams. Through his foundation, hopes to bridge the gap between parents and children, eliminate deliquency in teenagers and eliminate illiteracy. He plans to do this through reading programs, aftershool programs, computer programs, extracurricular activities, adopt-a-child activities and the annual Howard & Howard Basketball Camp. In 2004, the Foundation’s first annual Howard and Howard Basketball Camp brought together 162 participants for five days of athletic and educational sessions. Dwight also personally donated money for the Katrina Hurricane relief. Along with the Mayor and City Commissioner of Orlando and 175 volunteers from JetBlue, Boys & Girls Club, Washington Mutual and the community, Dwight and his Orlando Magic teammates helped to build a playground at the Boca Club Apartments in Orlando. The Dwight D. Howard Foundation, Inc., has provided scholarships for students who want to attend his alma mater, Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy in Atlanta Georgia. He also provided grants to Lovell Elementary School and Memorial Middle School in Orlando Florida. In December 2005, through his foundation Dwight hosted a prayer breakfast which will be held annually. He invited 25 students from five high schools Central Florida join him and he shared his testimony of God’s faithfulness in his life. |
