USA to face Venezuela in Olympic qualifying opener

The USA Basketball team, including Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, will begin its bid to win one of two Olympic berths from the Americas zone with a game against Venezuela on Aug. 22 in the FIBA Americas Championship 2007 in Las Vegas.

In a draw for the preliminary-round pools for the tournament on Wednesday in Las Vegas, Team USA was placed in Group B with Venezuela, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada and Brazil. The Americans will face the Virgin Islands Aug. 23, Canada on Aug. 25 and Brazil on Aug. 26.

Group A includes Argentina, Mexico, Uruguay, Panama and Puerto Rico. Magic point guard Carlos Arroyo is a key member of the Puerto Rican team.
