Dwight Howard Joins Big Boys

Dwight Howard is taking a quantum leap in the quality of summer camp which he'll be attending.

After back-to-back summers of suiting up for the Orlando Magic in a league primarily consisting of rookies and free agents, Dwight Howard is about to be seen on a far larger stage. He was named Sunday as one of the 23 invitees for a possible spot on USA Basketball's entry in the world championship and 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The honor should have come as no surprise to anyone who heard speculative reports of the list of players last week or has seen Dwight Howard become one of the NBA's top rebounders at such a young age. Not even Adam Morrison of Gonzaga or J.J. Redick of Duke, the only two college players chosen for the camp, are younger than the 20-year-old Dwight Howard.

Dwight Howard began Monday night tied with Shawn Marion of the Phoenix Suns for the lead in rebounds with an average of 12.3 a game. Marion is among several members selected who were also part of the U.S. team that was a huge disappointment in 2004 at Athens by coming home with only a bronze medal.

Camp is scheduled to open in mid-July at a site that has yet to be determined. Should Dwight Howard make the team that participates in the world championship in Japan , he could be there as late as Sept. 3, barely a month before the Magic are expected to open training camp.
